larawan of filipiniana-americana

while living in london in the 60s, national philippine artist, bencab nurtured a nostalgia for his native land, sifting through colonial photographic artifacts which documented filipinas of yesteryear. in this bridging of past and present, with the distance to his motherland, he articulated the derivative complexity of filipino culture in modern form.

we pay homage to his larawan series, with these portraits of the filipina-american: comedy troupe “granny cart gangstas”, navigating the same nostalgia + reconciliation of then and now, authentic and performed, dito and doon.
